However, if you are already a master's or doctoral student majoring in Korean studies or the Korean language in your home country, or an emerging scholar conducting Korea-related research, there is an excellent opportunity more focused on academic expertise than GKS: the Korea Foundation (KF) Fellowship, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Beyond simple language training or general degree programs, this guide provides a complete overview of the major KF fellowship programs, their 2026-based benefits, and application guidelines, all designed to cultivate global experts in Korean studies.

Europe (certain countries): 1,000 EUR per month for doctoral students, 600 EUR per month for master's students (typically supported for 2–4 years).
Other regions: Approx. $2,000/year for doctoral students, approx. $1,200/year for master's students.
Features: An essential financial support pipeline for global scholars looking to maximize their Korea-related research capabilities in their home country.
Fellowships for Emerging Scholars and Researchers
A living expense support program for advanced research personnel who have obtained a doctorate or are in the dissertation writing stage.

💡 Key Strategy Tips (Checklist)
Essential factors to check for a successful KF scholarship application:
Proof of clear "Relevance to Korea": Compared to general business or engineering majors, your chances of selection are significantly higher if your research topic focuses on "specific social phenomena, history, or linguistic characteristics of Korea."
Clear academic and research plan: Present a detailed timeline of what data you will collect in Korea, which faculty you will interact with, and how your research will contribute to the development of Korean studies in your home country.
Set up alarm for KF online system: The application deadline may change slightly each year. Announcements for the following year are usually made in July–August, so check the KF website notices frequently.
Important Notes for a Perfect Scholarship Portfolio
Concurrent receipt with the GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) is not possible.
The KF fellowship and the GKS, along with other financial support programs from the Korean government or domestic institutions, strictly regulate that benefits cannot be received twice during the same period. If your goal is to complete your entire degree in Korea, we recommend the GKS. If your home university is abroad and your goal is intensive research in Korean studies or language training for a specific period, we recommend applying for the KF Fellowship.
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q. What is the difference between the Korean Language Training Fellowship and a general university language center scholarship?
A. General university language center scholarships usually only waive 30–50% of tuition fees. On the other hand, the KF Korean Language Training Fellowship provides full coverage of tuition as well as a monthly living stipend of approx. 1.2 million KRW, providing a top-tier environment where you can focus 100% on your studies.
Q. Can non-majors apply for the KF Fellowship?
A. While application itself is not restricted, the selection probability is very high only if you are conducting research on a "topic clearly related to Korea (Korean Studies)" within the humanities, social sciences, or arts fields. It is much more advantageous for simple science and engineering majors to look into the GKS.
Q. When can I apply for the Korean Language Training Fellowship?
A. For the 2026 regular program, there is a high probability that pre-announcements and recruitment will begin in the summer of 2025 (around July). The exact timing and eligibility requirements must be checked on the KF online system (apply.kf.or.kr).
